So, I'm from Austin and have been searching high and low for the homemade tamales we all know and love in Texas. In a moment of desperation, I tried Craigslist. Here are some of the tips I received:

1. Pike Place Market and find the pig, go north of that and there is a little store there that makes awesome tamales by the dozen.
2. Farmers Market at Lake Chelan on a Saturday
3. Michuacan near Ballard and the Crown Hill neighborhood, during the holidays they make tamales. Reportedly best Tex-Mex food around.
4. Mexican grocery store in Burien - on Ambaum in a strip center with Goodwill. Reportedly better than the place at Pike for Mexico specific goods.
5. el Puerco LLoron at the Pike Place Market - it’s on the West side of Western over the stairs. (same place?)
6. La Cantina on Broadway & John.
7. Azteca's

I was hoping more for something more personal, you know, like made by someone's grandmother at home. I was finally contacted by someone like this, hooray! She takes orders and sells them through someone on Fridays. I'm about to go pick up my two dozen, we'll see how they are! If anyone is interested in her, I'll spread the contact info. (:

I can second Michuacan as the best interior Mexican food we've found in Seattle. I wouldn't call it Tex-Mex though . . . what I wouldn't give to go to Chuy's for happy hour tonight!!

Oh what I wouldn't give for a Mexican Martini...

Hmm . . . we've got a reasonable facsimile of Trudys mexmart recipe (it was quite a fun party trying to duplicate that recipe!). Email me at paula [at] paulaeffle [dot] com, if you'd like it. Let me know how the homemade tamales work out -- we're having a Tex-Mex/Salt Lick evening during our wedding weekend, and it might be a great local addition.
